nc disaster survivors don't trust FEMA

Trust is a very basic aspect of our society’s functioning. When we get to a stop light we trust that others are obeying the red light as we enter on green. People pay their taxes and they expect that government will equitably disburse those funds to programs approved by our elected officials.

When people’s trust in government breaks down we end up with a situation like the one in North Carolina where people are afraid of applying for disaster assistance. See this Washington Post article, Some N.C. residents distrust FEMA so much they’re hesitant to apply for hurricane aid

The truth is many people who live in very rural areas are self-sufficient and some live out in the woods to get away from government.  It is a free country, and it is their right to receive or refuse government assistance. However, it does make me sad that we have come to this point.
