what changes to expect at fema
Before one can begin to change something like the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) you need to understand what is existing. I found these two articles trying to address that question. The first is an AP story and is much more expansive in defining elements of FEMA’s programs—not too long to reach however. A more comprehensive explanation.
Here's what to know about FEMA as Trump talks of overhaul
Since people can exist in a siloed media world, there is this Fox News summary. Briefer, but accurate.
What is FEMA? The Federal Emergency Management Agency explained
What are the changes coming? I can sense it in my bones. To do some things “legally” will require Congressional action, e.g. how funding is accomplished. However, general programming measures, like what is being taught as policy and theory in emergency management training programs can be tossed out immediately. Expect all mention of climate change to go to the wayside and if there is not climate change, then there is no need for “climate adaptation” which is the lane emergency management occupies. What are we teaching about pandemics? That could all change. These are only simple examples of what could happen in one small area of our profession. I expect civilian contractors will reap many rewards (contracts) rewriting the curriculum for the next four years, and then if a Democrat wins the White House in 2028, rewriting it back to what it is today—with some improvements.
Watch for something else to perhaps come to light. If you want to expunge all existence of what was, you issue orders to have that old thinking “destroyed.” Trust me, this type of thinking exists. Federal government documents that include things like research on climate change and proofs that it is occurring could be ordered destroyed, files deleted. Yes, we have record retention requirements by law. However, there is a law that requires Congress be informed of any Inspector General dismissal 30 days prior to it occurring. That didn’t happen!
We are in an era of leadership where facts don’t matter. 38,000 Americans did not die building the Panama Canal, approximately 350 did. There is a difference in the number and the facts. US public health agencies have been banned from issuing any news releases updating the public on bird flu. Why I don’t have the slightest idea on that one. But I know that “up” can be called “down” and “down” called “up” in our topsy turvy world of today.
