Sweden's call for resilience
It is not often that I get the chance to write about another nation’s approach to disaster readiness. See this Guardian article, In Sweden, we’ve been told to prepare for war. But will 21st-century citizens still rally for the common good?
The article appears to be more of an opinion piece that discusses how individualism has more of a civic emphasis than working together for the common good. What prompted this was the government’s publication of a new disaster preparedness pamphlet for its citizenry, see in case of crisis or war
Major geopolitical and economic forces are in play throughout Europe. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has made many European nations rethink their national strategies. For Sweden it meant petitioning NATO to become a member have many decades of declared neutrality. It also means telling people to become for disasters and even war. That is a definite swing towards “homeland defense.”
I’m wondering when, not if we here in the USA see the same type of swing in disaster preparedness information in the years to come. I expect civil defense to make a comeback in one form or another.
On a cheerier note, this is my last blog post for 2024. I hope you and your extended family are doing well and enjoying good health.
Happy New Year,
Eric
