The Meaning of Hurricane Beryl

Early in the 2024 hurricane season we have Hurricane Beryl already a category five hurricane and barreling through the Caribbean with an expected/predicted path into the Gulf of Mexico.

Certainly climate scientists are pointing to the fact that it is the earliest Cat 5 Hurricane on record. Beryl is likely predictive of our 2024 hurricane season.

I was glad to hear some of the news sources highlighting that it is not just the wind speed that is dangerous. Most lives are lost due to storm surge washing inland, and the flooding that follows with copious rain inundating rivers and streams.

In a media broadcast highlighting the Midwest flooding from several weeks ago, an impacted homeowner noted, “Living on the river is great for recreational opportunities, but this is the second time in two years that we have been flooded out.”

It is stories and memories like this one that will start changing people’s ideas about where it is good to live and how hazards might actually jump up and bite them in the wallet.
