The Dam Store Story

Yes, that was the name of the store! See Residents mourn the loss of the Rapidan Dam Store.

It is an unfortunate loss of local history and likely many family traditions of going down to the Dam Store to pick up some groceries or grab something to eat. A destination for parents riding along with their children on bicycles.  The article says it all. The store was only 300 yards from the river and had stood there for over 100 years. The owners lost not only their home in the same event, but also their livelihood. Homeowners insurance does not cover flooding. That is an additional rider required for that hazard. The same for earthquakes, sewage backup, etc.  FYI, when/if you buy a home and have insurance, the sewage backup is ultra cheap and worth the money—should you have a problem!

What caught my attention was the inside headline of, “I never would have imagined this would happen in a million years!”  This then is the problem. During preparedness presentations I always call the audience’s attention to how the media will find an old codger who says something like, “I’ve lived here all my life, and I’ve never seen anything like this.” OK, let’s say that the person is 90 years old. In geological time or “river time” that is just a ‘speck’ on the calendar.  The climate clock is spinning faster and faster.

Watch as we move forward there will be many more superlatives used for what will happen concerning the weather and disasters. Look for these words/adjectives:

  • Historic

  • Unexpected

  • Catastrophic

  • Unprecedented

  • Unbelievable

  • Like a “war zone”

  • Disastrous

  • Calamity

  • Black Swan

  • Tremendous loss of…

  • Others?
