germany looking to fund more disaster resilience
There are many countries looking to react to the transformation of United States foreign relations and change is policies and attitudes toward decades long history of cooperation and collaboration, including treaties. I noted this article about the quick transformation being asked for in Germany under the leadership of the expected new chancellor Friedrich Merz, Merz, Challenges Germans to Make a Bold Strategic Shift. Will They Do It?
Within the article was this quote, “He also agreed with widening the definition of spending exempt from borrowing limits — a request by the Greens [a German political party] — to also include intelligence, aid to Ukraine, and response to natural disasters or other events threatening public peace.”
Basically, the Germans have not borrowed money to finance their defense, critical infrastructure or disaster readiness. So, this is a big turn of events. Also noted in the article the changes in part are being made by the continuing threats of climate change that they have seen evidenced in record flood events in recent years.
